The other way is to take a statistical approach, knowing that cpus rarely fail, but motherboards often do, and especially after years have gone. Cards are very good, but they still require a functioning processor and good power supply.

I like my P.O.S.T. Card, but rarely even both with it. The #1 hardware testing device I use is a power supply tester, which can be very handy to quickly test the PSU on a dead system. Much easier than a PSU swap. I use this one: The Ultra-X cards are very nice. Especially the model with built-in video (PCI2).

The product that he recommended is likely pretty good, I personally don't mess with them, but there are also more high-end programmable power supply units that provide more than enough current at all the voltage levels, and then they tell you what the computer is drawing. The benefit with that arrangement is that not only does it 'test', but it can make sure everything fires up ok, and see what it is drawing. When a computer is first powered on, it draws more current while disks spin up, and when the CPU is cranking away and/or overclocking kicks in, then the load can increase significantly. I have my doubts that a $20 device will be practical for diagnosing such scenarios.

So now it comes down to buying a decent POST board, a beefy power supply, and PSU testing device. This is what it takes to do the job quickly and correctly. The $20 device actually does a very nice job of confirming that a PSU is providing all of the correct voltages; and that it's reaching POK within the ATX specified time. It displays the actual # of milliseconds before POK is asserted and alarms if it or any of the system voltages are out of spec. What it doesn't do is apply full loads to all the buses, so it can still fail to diagnose a loading issue - but it catches most common PSU failures and is a VERY handy tool to have. I resisted buying one until about 4 years ago. But it's a VERY handy tool to have (one of those 'how did I ever live without it' kind of gadgets).

I've been monitoring this lively discussion and just have to get in some brief comments. I agree with garycase that a PSU tester is well worth having for a quick go/no go determination.

Much quicker than swapping PSUs. POST cards can be of great help with PCs that partially boot (try to boot but stop before BIOS and/or OS is able to load). What they cannot do, as already mentioned, is differentiate between a failed CPU and a failed motherboard. Although I don't use it often, it is well worth the small expense to have when needed. Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (DFT) is the only hard disk manufacturer's testing utility that will work with other manufacturers hard disks to the best of my knowledge. However, I have found out that it is not reliable when testing HDDs from other manufacturers. DFT has passed disks with bad sectors which were flagged as defective both by the manufacturer's diagnostics and Spinrite.

I bought testing software from Passmark years ago and found that it wasn't used often enough to justify the expense. There are many good, free tools available now and testing software is even less cost effective for a small shop. With enough experience, one generally has a good idea what the problem is after inspecting and trying to power up a system. You can usually narrow it down to one or two possible causes.

Vic - thanks for the pointer to the article. As I noted above, I've been using Sardu for quite a while, and find it an excellent tool. Nice to know there's an article that outlines how to use it for folks - although as I noted earlier there are some tools that don't download correctly with the built-in Sardu interface that require a bit of 'tweaking' to use. But it's easy to figure out what needs to be done with a bit of study of the folder structure Sardu creates.

Dalton - WD's Data Lifeguard works fine with other disks, although I agree the best approach is to use each manufacturer's diagnostic tools with their own disks Seagate's Seatools also works with other disks; but doesn't always display the drive serial numbers for other makers. I'll take a look as time allows - if I don't forget in a senior moment:-). The Windows versions are not as useful for diagnostics on other PCs and I really don't have much experience with them. Good ol' UBCD handles the lion's share of diagnostics for HDDs and memory and it has the DOS versions.

Do intend to play around with Sardu. I had seen it described before and forgot about it. At least this time I got as far as downloading it.May have been the Technibble newsletter that had the Sardu writeup.
